Meet Pixy, Snapchat’s new… drone? Let’s go with ‘drone’

Pixy drone Snapchat

During Snapchat’s last Partner Summit, the company announced Pixy. Pixy is a dinky drone that follows you around and then posts the resulting video to Snapchat. It’s very yellow, and it’s also very adorable.

The drone has been developed by Zero Zero Robotics, a company Snapchat partnered with last year. It seemed inevitable that we would be getting some news on a robot with Snapchat capabilities, and the company has delivered.

Pixy costs $230 (or R3,640) and is small enough to fit right in a pocket.

Oh Snapchat

In the showcase video above, you’ll note that nobody uses a controller. This is intentional. Pixy can only follow you around of its own accord. Snapchat says that Pixy flies in one of four preset flight paths. It’ll float, orbit, or follow whatever you tell it to. When it is done getting all those action shots, it will land gently on its owner’s hand.

It lacks an SD card slot, however. Unlike most other camera drones, Pixy can’t save any footage directly. It does include an internal 16GB drive, which can store either 1,000 pictures or… well, 16GB of video. The images and videos are shot using the onboard 12MP camera.

It also sends captured footage directly to a connected Snapchat account. When you want to see your video, you can find it in your Snap Memories, allowing you to post the video when you’re ready.

The Pixy doesn’t have a microphone attached, so all shots exclude sound. Editing directly from the Snap Memories section allows users to edit music over the video. It’s no longer the days of black and white films, your social media should probably include audio.

Another important feature is battery life. Snap says that a full charge is enough for five to eight flights before a charge is needed. A single flight will last anywhere between ten and twenty seconds. That’s a total flight time of about a minute and a half, which isn’t especially great. Snap does offer customers extra batteries, which will cost $20 (R320) each.

For the time being, Pixy is only available in the US and France. That might be for the best.
