Samsung Display has begun mass producing 90Hz OLED displays for laptops

Samsung Display

Back in January, Samsung Display announced that it would later begin producing 90Hz OLED panels for laptops, promising that they would, “best satisfy the diverse consumer need for laptops used in telework, online education, video streaming, and gaming.” The South Korean tech magnate kept its word, and has now begun mass producing said laptop displays.

Samsung Display delivers

Now, OLED displays on laptops aren’t anything new, but they’re not particularly commonplace. Even less so if you’re looking for a laptop in the range of affordable to budget. But thanks to Samsung Displays, more laptop producers will start sticking their hardware with these 90Hz panels, beginning with Asus, who already has some new offerings.

Asus announced its new ProArt Studiobooks and Zenbook 14X at the beginning of the month. Both laptop lines are kitted out with OLED displays, though only the top-tier models of the 14X and 14X convertible sport Samsung Display’s 90Hz screens.

“The demand for laptops is increasing steadily as working from home and remote learning become the new norm,” Asus Vice GM Y.C. said to The Verge. “OLED displays can meet consumers’ various needs as they’re using laptops for school, virtual meetings, video streaming, gaming, and more.”

Samsung Display said in a statement, “The 90Hz OLED panel offers more options for consumers who are looking to enjoy high-performance content on their laptops. With our innovative OLEDs, we’re further pioneering and leading the market in display technologies that offer superior image quality.”

Now, laptops with OLED displays are still gonna ring up more of a bill than their more standard LCD counterparts. But affordable and mass-produced 90Hz OLED laptop displays set a great precedent for techmakers’ next laptop models, the results of which we’re quite excited to see.
