How Twitter’s Super Follow feature will work

We all know that the advertising industry is always up to questionable practices, especially when it comes to social media platforms. Not to be outdone, Twitter is looking for additional revenue sources and is now testing a new feature called Super Follow, that’ll allow Twitter users to pay their favourite tweeters on a subscription basis.

But it looks like not just anyone will be allowed to charge for access to their fire tweets. New reports suggest that accounts will need to meet specific criteria if they want to charge followers a Super Follow subscription fee. Paying a fee will grant them access to ‘exclusive’ Twitter content, supporter badges or access to community groups.

‘Give me a Super Follow’

App researcher Jane Manchun Wong detailed how Super Follows will function, digging in to the terms and conditions a little. Much like drinking in South Africa, you’ll have to be eighteen years or older to play. Unlike drinking, you’ll need at least 10,000 followers on the platform and you’ll have to have posted at least 25 tweets over the previous month in order to qualify for Super Follows.

This means you’ll have to be fairly active on the platform, tweeting almost every day over a 30-day period, and have at least 10,000 people hanging onto your every word. It’s no easy feat to garner that kind of following, so it may be a good starting point for the Super Follows feature.

While it’s an interesting proposition, we can’t tell when the feature will roll out in South Africa (or any other country at this stage). According to Wong’s leaks, Twitter reckons a content creator can earn around $6,250 a month if they manage to convert 2% of their followers at a price of $4.99 a month. This price hasn’t been confirmed, however, and rest assured — Twitter will also be taking their cut from the final price.
