Fitbit will support USB-C charging going forward

It looks like Fitbit is taking a page from Apple and Samsung’s book, which means it’ll support USB-C charging following the Luxe device, slated for sometime in the next month.

Strangely, details on an exact launch date for the Luxe are still scarce, but we’re guessing that’s what a COVID-related product launch schedule looks like.

Fitbit’s new standard

The Luxe is also the first fitness tracker to launch under Google’s ownership, so it’ll be interesting to see whether the company tweaked the software to fit its own. But most interestingly, product images that have been found online clearly show that the Luxe will come with a USB-C cable.

This doesn’t mean the watch is fitted with a USB-C port, it means you’ll plug the USB-C end of the cable into a power adaptor or laptop to charge up the device.

Leading up to this, Fitbit religiously stuck to the USB-A format, as did most hardware brands. We’ve only started seeing brands pivot to USB-C as the next charging standard. Of course, there are many good reasons to opt for USB-C over A, the most important of which is speed, in the case of charging or data transfer.

While it looks like Fitbit will stick with its proprietary charging rockers (which are generally dedicated to only one range of trackers), it’s nice to see another hardware maker pivot to the new standard.
