Twitter opens up Spaces hosting to anyone with over 600 followers

Clubhouse may have taken the world by storm (for now), but all it did was open the floodgates. Twitter’s Spaces, which is a similar concept to Clubhouse and whatever clone Facebook is cooking up (kidding, it’s called Live Audio Rooms), is about to expand in a big way.

If you’re hauling around at least 600 Twitter followers, then you’re newly eligible to host a Spaces session using either the Android or iOS version of the app. Soon you too can talk into the void in the hopes that your followers will tune in.

The Spaces between us

But that’s just hosting, of course, and the seemingly arbitrary limit is because “…these accounts are likely to have a good experience hosting live conversations because of their existing audience. Before bringing the ability to create a Space to everyone, we’re focused on learning more, making it easier to discover Spaces, and helping people enjoy them with a great audience.”

Twitter also has a basic rundown of what the service’s audio er… areas entail. It’s a little like a Twitch chat room, except you can hear people speaking, and invitations can be sent to specific people, or to listeners, so that they can speak in your Space as well. If all goes well, you’ve got yourself a little live podcast going. If all goes terribly, you’ll just be talking to yourself.

And if you haven’t hit the follower count (yet)? Never fear, you can join any going Spaces and participate as a listener for the moment. Twitter intends to make the feature more widely available as it figures out exactly how it’s all supposed to work.
