While MetroFibre may not be one of the big fibre ISPs in South Africa, operating mainly around Gauteng, Durban and Gqeberha, even it is benefitting from the recent fibre infrastructure boost. Announced this morning, MetroFibre will be upgrading the line speed for all fibre-to-the-home customers on 1 June, 2021. As for many other ISPs, this means that user’s will benefit from faster internet connections absolutely free of charge. It’s been a fairly common occurrence for ISPs around South Africa in recent months with most offering a similar deal… except for Vumatel, which has earned the company the (fib)ire of it’s customers.
Beyond the very satisfying free speed boost, MetroFibre has also announced that it’s planning to introduce a new 300mbps package for all customers which certainly sounds excessive but you just know someone is going to leap at the opportunity. In the wake of this introduction, the 10mbps entry package is being discontinued and replaced by the 25mbps option. Obviously, folks on the 10mbps package will be upgraded free of charge.
Here are MetroFibre’s upgrades:
As stated above, users on the 10mbps package will be upgraded to 25mbps. 25mbps will be boosted up to 50 mbps and, you guess it, 50mbps users will no be operating on 100mbps lines. The same thing applies even further up the chain as 100mbps users will be upgraded to 200mbps and as for those already on 200mbps, MetroFibre’s previously highest offer, they’ll be taken up to 300mbps.
Again, none of these upgrades will cost a thing. What you were paying for 25mbps will be exactly what you’re paying for 50mbps. We certainly can’t complain about that. If you want to check your coverage, you can head on over here.
