Don’t panic Huawei owners. The Chinese phone maker says your phone will get Android Q

We’ve all had questions, ever since it first was announced that Huawei is losing access to Google’s Android operating system. There was talk of a backup OS (which may or may not happen), a delayed notebook, and through it all Huawei has remained… remarkably calm.

And now, perhaps some of that calm will rub off on us. Why? Huawei reckons that its current most popular handsets will get Android Q — those that were going to get it, anyway.

Huawei, via its UK-based website, has issued some fresh reassurances concerning the availability of Android updates for its current crop of devices. Rocking one of the headliners, like the P30, P30 Pro, the Mate 20, and others? Android Q is likely in the offing for you and yours — though the company hasn’t said anything about Android R. Then again, nor have Samsung, LG, Sony, Google…

Huawei says, “Anyone who has already bought or is about to buy a Huawei smartphone, can continue to access the world of apps as they have always done. All devices continue to be covered by our manufacturer’s warranty and will receive full service support accordingly”.

The “about to buy” mention is important, though, from Huawei’s perspective. There are loads of folks who have given the brand the cold shoulder because of ongoing uncertainty concerning the company. Obviously, Huawei would prefer it if people didn’t do that. Hence, all the reassurances.

It goes on to say, “Our most popular current devices, including the P30 series, will be able to access Android Q. In fact, we have already launched a beta developer programme for Android Q which is running right now on our Mate 20 Pro device”. Which is even more reassuring. For now.

There’s no list available just yet detailing which of Huawei’s phones will definitely get Android Q. We’re keeping an eye out for one, though. It’ll be handy to have a cheat-sheet of which Huawei phones Donald Trump hasn’t managed to devastate. Yet.
