iPhone 11 rumoured to launch with triple cameras, square camera bump

We’re a long way out from Apple’s annual iPhone reveal but that doesn’t mean that folks aren’t still (always) trying to figure out what’s next for the company. The newest talk about town? Apple will likely jump on the triple-camera bandwagon for the iPhone 11. And if it’s true, helped along with an apparent design leak, we’re not really sold on the design. It doesn’t feel like something Apple would do, you know?

Japanese Apple website Macotakara reports that, based on information from Chinese suppliers, Apple is gunning for a triple rear camera setup for its 2019 smartphone. The cameras will supposedly be arranged in a square, with the fourth spot being used for an LED flash. Said square will protrude from the back of the device, in typical Apple style. Again, according to rumours. Mockups of the supposed device have been published but they just feel… wrong.

But it could well be that this is the design choice Apple will make for 2019. Earlier this year OnLeaks reported the same sort of camera arrangement and bump, albeit one without the sensors and flash in a properly square configuration. That doesn’t mean that this particular rumour is set in stone, but it’s leaning in that direction. As always, though, Apple’s gonna do what Apple does best and that is: Keep silent until its annual event. Or about 20 minutes before proceedings start, anyway.

If Apple goes for an even more substantial camera bump this year and three sensors, current information suggests that the snapper upgrade will be confined to the iPhone XS and XS Max’s successors. Even then, it’ll be limited to the higher storage editions. The double camera will be sticking around for lower-spec iPhones, apparently.

There will be other changes that are almost a given. Apple will debut a new A13 processor — we’d put money on that, but then nobody’s going to bet against it. Expect performance jumps in processing and graphics as a result — Apple does love those numbers. We’d also be willing to bet on some sustainable innovations and Apple’s own reclaimed alloy in the next iPhone’s construction. For everything else, we’ll have to wait for more supply chain leaks or for a device to be left somewhere conspicuous.
