Light Start – Windows 10 issues, Banksy, another smart helmet, and extra Aquaman

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Microsoft pulls October Windows 10 update after it (apparently) kills some user’s documents
Windows 10 is supposed to be the last operating system that you’ll ever need, with Microsoft supporting it and changing it over time rather than releasing a whole new OS. Which is great, except that sometimes things go wrong — even with the most well-oiled machine. Microsoft has pulled the Windows 10 October 2018 Update that was launched at their Surface event last week, due to an issue where some users were seeing documents being deleted. The company said on a Windows Update support page, “We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating”, adding that anyone who has manually downloaded the update should NOT install it and that anyone affected should get in touch with the company directly. We don’t know about you but our prime (work) use case for Windows is document creation so we can see how this could be a problem. The update is on hold indefinitely for now while Microsoft works everything out.

So you think you’re good at planning ahead, do you? Even the Lisa Simpson-level organised have to step back and admire Banksy, well-known graffiti artist and general madman, who built a shredder into the frame for one of his prints — called Girl with Balloon — just in case it was ever auctioned off. It was, by Sothebys, this past Friday, fetching $1.4 million (almost R21 million). And, on cue, the shredder inside activated and dropped the print through a collection of blades. Weirdly, the value of this particular painting is likely to go up rather than down, so whoever dropped the cash on it likely isn’t too miffed at what has happened. We’ve been waiting ages for a truly smart motorcycle helmet. Several companies have tried, with the best contender being the Skully AR-1 (which never really happened). Taking up the challenge now is Jarvish, a Taiwanese company that aims to release the Jarvish X — a R12,000 helmet with voice control that can chat to Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri. Users will be able to ask for directions, play music and perform other tasks using their helmet-connected smartphones. There’s also the R38,600 Jarvish X-AR, which combines the smart assistant brains with a 2K front-facing video camera, a drop-down heads-up-display which can show directions and speed, and a rear camera which transmits what’s going on behind on the retractable HUD. Both helmets have an internal battery (which will have to be charged at least daily) and both are made from carbon fibre. There’s a Kickstarter campaign incoming for both in 2019, if you’ve already got your heart set on one.

This trailer makes us (and more than a few other South Africans, we bet) a little sad. We were supposed to see star Jason Momoa at Comic Con Africa this year but… he wasn’t able to make it. But we will get a movie with battle-sharks in it at the end of the year, so it’s hard to stay mad about something like a scheduling conflict. The five-minute Aquaman trailer released at this year’s New York Comic Con also does its part to make up for it. There’s a varied lot of action on display, as well as a tone that puts us in mind of an Uncharted game — which means that Aquaman could wind up being more… fun… than DC’s movies have been of late. Plus, sticking Arthur Curry in the Sahara Desert (searching for Atlantis) should provide us with plenty of space for one-liners when the film releases later this year. Watch the full trailer below.
