LG makes its five-camera V40 ThinQ official

LG’s V40 ThinQ smartphone is a rumour no longer — the South Korean company has officially unveiled its five-camera handset, detailing all of the bits and pieces we can expect inside it — as well as giving us a fair look at what we can expect to see in the LG G8 when it’s announced.

Back to the main show, though, the highlight of LG’s V40 ThinQ is obviously the camera arrangement. LG has packed the rear with three camera sensors: a 12MP f/1.5 sensor which uses larger pixels (1.4μm) than those seen in the LG G7, the same super-wide 16MP f/1.9 sensor seen in the G7, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens that confers 2x optical zoom on LG’s handset.

How it performs is something that we’re really excited to see in person but LG has also been improving the software side of their cameras. There are new lighting effects, a so-called ‘triple-preview’ mode that shows users a preview from each camera sensor (so you can pick the one you like best) and ‘triple-shot’, which lets users snap an image with all three sensors at once. The phone saves a GIF of the three images transitioning into each other, as well as individual images so you can make up your mind later.

The front side of the phone will sport a 5MP wide-angle lens and an 8MP standard lens, for selfie reasons. There are new lighting options there as well, so you can look better than real-life on social media. Like you do.

If you’re feeling the need for speed, LG’s also taken care of business there. A Snapdragon 845, 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage are standard. There’s microSD support if you need a little space, their 32-bit Quad DAC (which they’re never going to leave out), LG’s Boombox speaker and an IP68 water-and-dust rating. Oh, and a headphone jack, 3,300mAh battery (Qi wireless charging is supported) and a 6.4in 3,120 x 1,440 OLED display. The V40 ThinQ is going to be a big ‘un. The handset will run Android Oreo at launch.

The LG V40 ThinQ has been dated for the States, where it’ll be arriving on 18 October. Other regions still have pricing and availability announcements pending. Look for a review as soon as we can pry one from LG’s hands.
