Sort out your dwindling storage space with a 4TB SSD from Samsung

Although the capacity of storage devices has been growing at a tremendous rate, we’re still ecstatic to hear that Samsung is producing 4TB Solid State Drives (SSDs), aimed specifically at consumers. That means us, the normies.

Samsung’s new 4-bit SATA SSD will pave the way to massive terabyte-sized hard drives for normal people, which will, in turn, lower the prices… slightly, at least.

The SSD’s use 4-bit V-NAND memory tech, which means that more memory is packed into the same space as with the previous 3-bit cells — all while operating at the same speeds. As a result, the new 4TB 2.5-inch SATA-based SSDs read and write data at 540MB/s and 520MB/s, respectively — which is fast enough to capture and playback RAW 4K video files.

Samsung has yet to reveal the all-import prices for the new devices. Right now, you can pick up a generic 4TB hard drive on Takealot for around R1,800, while Samsung’s 860 EVO 4TB SSD drive could cost over R24k.

Pricing for the new SSDs will have to drop quite a bit if Samsung aims to get an SSD into normal households. But we’re pleased to know it’s out there nonetheless.
