Soon you’ll be able to stream Steam games from PC to smartphone

Steam is an amazing invention, a cloud-based library of games for us to all buy (on special, naturally) and then never install, play, or look at again. After all the saying does go: He who dies with the most unplayed Steam games wins.

But some people must use the service for more than just playing DOTA 2 and Team Fortress 2 and those folks will be pleased with the changes coming to Steam Link.

Steam Link, for those who don’t know, is an application that allows gamers to stream games from their home PC to a connected TV set, where they can be played on the biggest screen in the house. And soon you’ll also be able to play Steam games on the smallest screen in the house as well.

The company has announced that Steam Link will be expanding its offering to mobile devices, with the launch of an app that will permit “…gamers to experience their Steam library of games on their Android (phone, tablet, TV) and iOS-based (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV) devices while connected via 5Ghz network or wired Ethernet to a host system (Mac or PC), with Android access initially offered in beta”. Support for the Steam Controller and MFI controllers (game controllers designed for mobile devices, like the GameSir range), as well as others to be announced, will be included.

Steam Link for mobile devices will be launching in the week of 21 May this year, meaning that the possibility of playing… well, let’s be honest, DOTA 2 on our smartphones is a lot closer than it was last week.

Steam Video will also be launching for mobile devices, at a later point this year. This app will let users stream the video offerings from the online gaming platform to mobile devices. Little else is known about the app but it will also provide for offline streaming when it launches for Android and iOS — as all good streaming apps should.
