Huawei’s got a new laptop and tablet, and we’re definitely getting the former

While Samsung and Nokia showed off new handsets yesterday in Barcelona, Huawei has opted to keep its new phones on hold for its own launch events later this year and unveiled a new MateBook X Pro laptop and MediaPad M5 tablet instead.

The MateBook X Pro is an ultraportable laptop with a 3K touch-sensitive display and 3000 x 2000 pixel resolution. It gets its grunt from Intel’s 8th gen Core i5/i7 processors, with graphics power coming from NVIDIA’s GeForce MX150 GPU. It’s also packing a long-lasting 57.4Wh battery. From an entertainment perspective, a built-in Dolby Atmos Sound System and custom speakers should make for solid audio, even from a super-slim device.

Meanwhile, the MediaPad M5 is a tablet with a 2K HD display — available in 8.4in and 10.8in versions — and speakers “tuned by Harman Kardon”. The larger version also comes with Huawei’s M-Pen that offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

Huawei says, the MateBook will come to South Africa towards the middle of 2018. It has yet to decide whether or not the MediaPad will be brought to the local market, and the decision will be based on its assessment of the local tablet market. It adds that the MateBook X Pro pricing is expected to be between R23,999 and R29,999 depending on specifications.
