Some people always have to do things the hard way and we call those people Linux users. And Samsung hasn’t forgotten about them, as the South Korean company has shown in a pending update to the DeX dock for Galaxy flagship phones.
If you haven’t guessed by now, Samsung has introduced Linux for DeX, allowing users to use the complicated operating system using their smartphones. Called Linux on Galaxy, the being-trialled feature allows the use of Linux on an Android handset through use of an app.
The app “…gives smartphones the capability to run multiple operating systems, enabling developers to work with their preferred Linux-based distributions on their mobile devices”, and users won’t need a DeX station to make use of it. It is DeX-enabled and optimised, though, and will operate as though it were a full desktop. Still a virtual machine at the end of the day; but it could prove useful to be able to carry a very powerful (if rather arcane) operating system in your pocket.
The feature isn’t available yet (sorry coders and developers) but Samsung does have a sign-up sheet so that you can be the first to know when it lands.
Samsung has also announced that some mobile games are going to be optimised for DeX as well, meaning that you could be using your smartphone as a… gaming PC? Seriously, that’s where we’re heading? Apparently, and the first games to be properly optimised include the upcoming Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition and Vainglory. That’s… actually quite impressive.
