Say what you like about Samsung’s handsets, the new Galaxy Note 8 has proved itself an attractive device so far. Not only is it the most powerful phone that Samsung has released to date, it’s also one of the most durable.
Just how durable is a question that YouTube user JerryRigEverything put to the phone when he took a brand new Galaxy Note 8 out of its box and then started scratching at the display with a series of… spikes? Yeah, those are definitely spikes. It takes a while, and a considerably hard spike, to inflict some damage on the handset’s OLED display. Which means it’s on to another torture method.
Which arrives in the form of a carpet knife, one that is barely able to mess with Samsung’s newest screen. Camera and other sensors emerge from the scratching but the S Pen, the phone’s metal edges, camera outcropping, and fingerprint sensor don’t fare quite as well. Fingerprint sensor still works though.
The torture test isn’t done. A lighter flame is applied directly to the Note 8’s display, ruining it for good, before a tremendous amount of pressure is applied in an effort to snap — or even bend — the phone. Spoiler: it doesn’t work.
The Samsung Note 8 may not survive a face-down fall onto concrete but it’ll stand up to almost any other abuse you can fling at it, short of directly applying knives to sensitive areas or an open flame to the same. Sort of like smartphone users, who have very similar weak points.
