Video leak gives us a close look at Samsung’s rugged Galaxy S8 Active

There’s no denying that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 is a gorgeous phone but that effect is achieved by the use of glass. Lots and lots of gorgeous, fragile glass. If you’re the clumsy type then a different sort of phone might be in order — a phone like Samsung’s unannounced Galaxy S8 Active. As it happens…

Samsung hasn’t officially taken the wraps off the Galaxy S8 Active but the handset has leaked, apparently via a Samsung employee in San Francisco. And the leak, chronicled in images and video (below), show off a phone that is definitely different from Samsung’s flagship. Even so, you can tell that the two handsets are related.

Samsung has more than a few Galaxy Sx Active handsets in its past so the existence of this one isn’t a surprise. This rugged phone will feature a polycarbonate body with metal edges, built to military specifications, so it should be (mostly) durable. In its rear view it looks like someone has clipped on one of those aftermarket cases supposedly designed to prevent your phone from coming to a premature end. From the front it looks very S8, with one massive difference — the screen isn’t curved.

Reported specs for the S8 Active are: a Snapdragon 835, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. A 12MP rear and 8MP front camera are part of the spec, as is Android 7.0.

About the only downside is that the model leaked here is set to be exclusive to AT&T in the States. We’re hoping for a more durable version of the S8 to land a little closer to home but those ambitions will have to wait until Samsung makes a formal announcement for this handset.
