Apple’s 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro is being discontinued

Get them while you can: Apple has, quietly and without fuss, killed off the 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro in the States, meaning that any stock around the world will be sold off and when it’s gone, it’s gone.

It’s hardly a surprise that Apple has taken this route. The 2012 MacBook Pro is (or rather, was) the oldest device in Apple’s lineup up until the culling and Apple is all about keeping around the new and exciting. The processor and GPU were getting on a little in the four-year-old notebook and battery life was not quite as good as later models have offered.

But the non-Retina Pro had its positive side too. The RAM and hard drive are easily upgraded and there was still a full complement of ports to be had (no USB-C though, for obvious reasons). The notebook was also the last Apple hardware of its type to feature an optical drive, making it ideal for offices that hadn’t yet transitioned to the cloud or, you know, flash drives.

The older hardware is being replaced by Apple’s 2015 Retina Pro model. Given the legs of its ancestor, we expect to see this one hang around until at least 2019 before it is replaced.
