Microsoft doubles free OneDrive storage, drops sub pricing from next month

Microsoft has fired the first salvo in a storage war (we dearly hope) by announcing that they’re giving OneDrive users more than double the free storage that they had in the past. A new post over at the OneDrive blog details just what Microsoft has changed with regards to storage and storage plans but what you really need to know is that free storage has jumped from 7GB to 15GB. The second thing that you need to know is that these changes only go live from next month.

They’re not just giving out more free storage though, they’ve got something in store for Office365 subscribers as well. Having an Office365 subscription will translate into having a 1TB OneDrive subscription as well, whether it’s the Home, Personal or University version of the software. Office365 Home, which lets you have up to 5 users, will see each user scoring a terabyte of cloud storage from Microsoft.

And then there’s the price drop. Storage will cost less, with both the 100GB and 200GB packages being cheaper than before. The 100GB subscription is falling from $7.50 (R80) to $2.00 (R22) and the 200GB subscription will cost $$ (R45), down from $11.50 (R122) per month. Hopefully other cloud storage providers will follow suit with the price drops soon.
