Parrot has a smartphone-connected mini-drone and a jumping robot headed our way

Usually when you think of Parrot, you think of those large quadrocopters with the embedded webcams mounted in them. Or pirates, but that’s a whole other game of word association.

Parrot has something newer on the horizon though and  it takes the form of two new gadgets that will be landing in South Africa at an unconfirmed date this year. One of these is the Parrot Minidrone, a smartphone or tablet controlled critter that is a tiny relative of the large drones mentioned above. It’s able to live inside two little wheels that allow it to move along the ground or through a room without doing too much damage to itself or surfaces, giving it an unnerving insect-like appearance at the same time.

The other is called the Parrot Jumping Sumo. This is a more ground-based piece of tech, when it isn’t leaping through the air like a demented grasshopper. The Jumping Sumo also features a camera, so you can record its acrobatic shenanigans as it tumbles around.

The video above is a promotional video of the two devices in action. Local distributor CMN Marketing have said that the pair, which debuted at CES this year, will be available in South Africa at some point. They’re just not sure when yet.
