Apple’s iPad Air and other announcements

Apple’s new iPad has been unveiled and it offers a fairly substantial redesign over the older models of the tablet. Dubbed the iPad Air, the new tablet features the same processor and co-processor found in the new iPhone 5s (Apple’s 64-bit A7 CPU and the M7 co-processor).

The display for the tablet remains unchanged, being a 9.7-inch Retina affair, but Apple have scaled down the dimensions just about everywhere else. The iPad Air is claimed to be 20% thinner than previous models of iPad, measuring just 7.5mm thick, and it weighs in at just 460 grams or so. The Air suffix starts to make sense right about now. A 5 megapixel camera a FaceTime HD camera are features of the light-as-a-feather tablet and Apple also says that the iPad Air has a 10-hour battery life and speedier WiFi.

Apple has also announced that, as of today, the OS X Mavericks installation will be available from the Mac App Store. Pricing for the update has also been revealed and as long as you’re running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or newer, Mavericks is free of charge. Whether this extends to South Africa isn’t known yet (though it should), it hasn’t pitched up on the local App Store at the time of writing. Stuff will have more details on Mavericks at a later stage.

Pricing and availability of the Mac Pro was also made known. Apple intends to release the new cylindrical desktop unit in December this year and the price tag… is a cool $2,999 (R29,150).

Also announced at Apple’s event was the refresh of several MacBook Pro models and an iPad mini with Retina display but we’ll have all of the details for you on those and other updates from the event tomorrow.
