Feeling a little sheepish about the number of DNFs on your 2024 reading list? Trying to up those rookie numbers in 2025? You’re not alone. It’s hard – true, but there is an answer: audiobooks, an industry currently led by the Bezos empire. If you’ve yet to go down the Audible rabbit hole, Amazon might just convince you to give it a go.

Audible Premium Plus (Pro Max)

Newcomers to Amazon Audible can (and should) get access to the service’s Premium Plus plan for $1 per month – for the first three months. That’s $3 if you’re having trouble totting it all up. After that, you’ll be resigned to paying the usual $14.95/m price, so keep your finger triggered over that ‘cancel’ button in a few months.

Amazon’s site might tell you that the “offer is available only to US consumers who are not existing Audible members,” but that’s simply not true. South Africans looking to join the Audible craze have long been forced to use American pricing out of the gate – and the same applies to the $1/m deal. We’ve tested it ourselves and were charged a grand total of R19.41. Excellent.

The deal only applies to the Audible Premium Plus plan, offering subscribers access to “thousands of additional audiobooks [including] originals, and podcasts from the Plus Catalog.” That’s on top of one free ‘credit’ per month – arguably the most valuable bit of the whole thing. Credits allow users to claim one free audiobook for a month. These stick around on your Amazon account forever – even after you cancel.

Play your credits right, and you’ll have three audiobooks for the low price of R58.23 under your belt. That’s only if you get in on the $1/m deal before it ends. That’ll be happening next week on 21 January, so best be quick about it. To claim the deal, visit the Audible site here, and click the banner at the top of the page to claim the deal.
