The Undisputed Masters, an international breakdancing competition courtesy of Fujifilm Instax, is making its way to Cape Town for its 2025 installment. Having been to São Paulo, Paris, the Netherlands, New York, and Tokyo, this is the competition’s first time on African soil.
Fujifilm Instax Undisputed Masters
The last event in São Paulo saw over 600 dancers participate, putting pressure on Cape Town to show how it’s done. Considering it’s the last stop before the World Finals in Tokyo in March 2025, there’s plenty of pressure for all concerned. Entry to the Cape Town leg of the Fujifilm Instax Undisputed Masters is free for attendees, and breaking battles are open to all ages.
The competition has three categories: Solo Men, Solo Women, and Crews. The 5v5 crew battle features groups of five members. Rules for solos and crews are the same, but the dynamics are different. In each round each crew can decide their approach – they may send one dancer, the whole group, or anything in between.
Winners in each category earn a trip to Tokyo to compete in the World Final, as well as a brand-new flagship Instax Mini Evo instant camera. Solo winners get a R15,000 cash prize, while the winning crew gets R70,000.
Attendees will also be graced by breaking legend and Olympic medalist Phil Wizard. He will judge alongside an international panel led by the UK’s Renegade and Germany’s Storm, co-creators of the Trivium Judging System, used in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This scoring system judges dancers based on three criteria: physical, interpretive, and artistic quality. Joining them will also be Nemesis from the USA, South African breaking icons Genetics, and b-girl Vee.
Instax will run a photo booth activation where attendees can take pictures of themselves via the Instax Biz App. There will also be a showcase of Instax’s range of instant cameras and printers. Anyone of any gender or age may enter the Fujifilm Instax Undisputed Masters at and8.dance and try their luck at winning a trip to Tokyo. The event takes place on 18 January 2025 at Amphitheatre V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
