SA geek culture curator Afro Geek is bringing Afro-futurism to the 2024 rAge Expo with its Afro Geek Playroom. The Playroom will immerse attendees in the world of innovative South African creative projects, gathering artists, game developers, and other innovators from across Africa. Attendees can take part in VR demo features, indie games by African studios, and artist pieces.

rAge head Michael James says the partnership with the geek collective introduces “a fresh, futuristic energy,” creating an intersection of African culture and technology that will engage and inspire audiences. “From the immersive experiences in the [Playroom] to the artist-driven Afro Geek FanFest, we’re excited to showcase authentic innovation that will resonate with our audience,” he continues.
Main attractions include an interactive laser-cut chess set by artist Neosentle, and Mzansi Mayhem, a trading card game with African superheroes, designed by award-winning Zimbabwean comic artist Bill Masuku. Independent African studios will also showcase immersive VR worlds and landscapes.
Beyond gaming, the Playroom will have the Afro Geek FanFest, an art competition inviting creators to reimagine their favorite video game characters. Fans vote on their favourites online, with winning pieces displayed later at the Playroom and available for purchase, bringing the scattered fans of African art and artists together in one space.
“We’re thrilled to showcase these unique African experiences,” says Tapelo Zama, Afro Geek’s director, “offering attendees a taste of Afro-futurism’s potential to shape art and technology.” The Playroom at rAge promises to be a celebration of African creativity and cutting-edge tech. Visitors can catch it at the 2024 event at the end of this month.
