In its latest beta (2.24.16.7) for Android, WhatsApp began testing the inclusion of new backgrounds and filters to its video call function to improve the user experience during video calls. The hope is that these new customisable filters and backgrounds – finally announced by WhatsApp – will make virtual interactions more engaging and enjoyable for users (and keep you around on the platform for longer than, say, Teams or Zoom).
WhatsApp’eals to Zoomers
Users can choose from ten filters such as Warm, Cool, Vintage TV, and more, allowing users to adjust the tone and mood of their video calls. Not unlike Instagram’s own filters, others in the list include Black & White, Fisheye, and Two Tone. Just hit the effects icon at the top right of your screen the next time you’re in a one-on-one or even a group call to start experimenting.
In addition to the filters, WhatsApp is adding a background customization feature. This allows users to either blur their surroundings or choose from ten backgrounds, including vibrant cityscapes and serene beach sunsets, all in the name of limiting those distractions during a more typical video call.

Complementing these are two tools for enhancing the visual experience: Touch Up and Low Light. The Touch Up feature subtly smooths your features to make you look better. The Low Light option can effectively clean up a dimly lit video call by automatically adjusting the brightness for you.
Zuckerberg confirmed the broader testing of these features on WhatsApp, sharing a series of screenshots to demonstrate the range of filters and backgrounds that’ll eventually hit the messenger. You can expect that to happen “in the coming weeks.”
