It’s been a busy week for Apple. Not only was the hardware and software giant slapped with a massive €13 billion tax bill by the EU, but it also launched four new iPhones, some USB-C-ified AirPods and Apple’s most metal Watch yet. Pre-orders officially open today for South Africa, and… well, they’re not cheap.
And it only gets worse from there. For one thing, those customers throwing down their cold hard cash this afternoon (or feigning richness by picking up a monthly contract) will have to wait an entire week for their new smartphones to turn up on their doorsteps. For another, the iPhone 16 starts at R21,000.
Going local
And that’s just for the 128GB model. Jack that up to 256GB storage and you’re stuck paying R23,400. Hey, some might even consider the (somewhat late) addition of Apple Intelligence, a nearly identical 6.1 Super Retina XDR OLED display, or its AAA gaming capabilities with the absurd price, but we’d beg to differ.
If you want to double that and pick up 512GB in the vanilla iPhone 16, you’ll need to fork over R29,000 for the privilege. If you were hoping for something in the 1TB range – budding videographers look away now – you’ll need to make do with something in the far pricier Pro line-up.

Those customers looking to give the display a nice little upgrade, say to the 6.7in size, can pick up the base iPhone 16 Plus with 128GB storage for R24,000. Double that up to 256GB and watch the price soar to R26,500. And finally, there’s the iPhone 16 Plus with 512GB of storage – the last iPhone 16 without ‘Pro’ in its name – and the most expensive of the lot. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a listing for that online.
