Minecraft is getting an animated Netflix series for its fifteenth birthday

Minecraft Netflix

Minecraft has been around for fifteen years. That might be why Mojang and Microsoft are making a big deal about the educational survival game* right now. The newest bit of news about the title? That would be its very own animated Netflix series. No, not that one. Another one.

Not content with having the best-selling game of all time (a claim which may have some creative counting but seems to hold up), it’s time for an all-new Netflix series that seems more focused on the Mojang version of the game rather than the TellTale Games rendition of it.

Arts and Minecrafts

At least, that’s the impression the (very) limited teaser and announcement video gives us. It’s also reminiscent of The Lego Movie‘s intro sequence with Morgan Freeman and Lord Business, but don’t tell the Netflix execs that.

Little is known about the show’s content, only that it’ll feature all-new characters and a new story. Whether Steve and his mates turn up isn’t confirmed but there’s supposed to be a Minecraft movie sorting that out at some point. Development is being handled by WildBrain, a studio that has created a few other high-profile computer-animated shows for the streaming giant.

Suppose you’re not the patient sort and want to swim in Minecraft‘s anniversary pool some more before someone gets around to giving out some more details on this one (including an official name). In that case, you can check out the rest of Mojang’s fifteenth-anniversary content here.
