TCL’s massive X955 TV lands in South Africa, comes with a free 98in TV if you buy before July

How large does a TV set have to be before a company gives away a free 98-inch (that’s not a typo) TV alongside it. About as large as the TCL X955, an absolutely gigantic 115-inch QD-Mini LED set from the Chinese tech maker. For once, you don’t have to look at this one from afar (though you can, the screen is massive). It’s here.

It’ll also cost R400,000 to install one of these sets in your home but there are at least two problems with this quite aside from funding the thing. First of all, you need to figure out where to put it. Second of all, you’ll require space for the free 98in TCL P745 (which currently retails for R50k here in South Africa) you’ll get with your purchase.

X955 might sink your wallet

You didn’t think it would be cheap, did you? The TCL X955 features an almost comically large 4K UHD panel backed by the company’s quantum dot (QD) Mini LED tech. What that looks like we can’t quite say, having not clapped eyes on this monster (yet) but the more than 20,000 dimming zones promise a great compromise between QLED and OLED.

Dolby’s Vision and Atmos tech are both supported. Even so, you’ll probably install a soundbar (if you can find one expensive enough) to accompany this screen. There’s no excuse for not having the best sound possible and TVs, no matter how expensive, could always use a hand in this area. Or perhaps not. TCL’s set integrates a 6.2.2 sound system made by Japanese brand Onkyo.

HDR10+ and Dolby Vision IQ are also features, as is a peak brightness of 5,000 nits. The X955 operates a variable refresh rate of 144 Hz, meaning everyone from cinema freaks to gamers will be pleased with the screen performance. Assuming you can sit close enough for your controller to maintain a wireless connection with your console while seeing the whole panel without turning your head, that is.

Mike Chen, GM of TCL South Africa, said, “The launch of the TCL 115’’ X955 underscores our dedication to providing South African consumers with access to the latest advancements in home entertainment technology, enabling them to enjoy an immersive cinematic experience right in their living rooms. With its cutting-edge technology and stunning design, this TV sets a new standard.”

By the way, that free 98-in TV offer? That’s only valid until the end of June this year so you’ve only got a few short weeks to convince your bank manager that you can’t do your job without a 115in TV in the background. Good luck to you.
