Having just recently spent months in the company of the Honor 90, we’re open to pretty much anything the Chinese brand throws South Africa’s way – especially when the devices they’re pushing cost less than R3,500. That’s the deal Honor is promising with its latest two devices, the X6a and X5 Plus – budget devices that’ll set you back R3,300 and R2,700 respectively.

A good price isn’t all that’s important in a smartphone. It’s got to be capable of the basics: making phone calls, receiving messages and, most importantly, booting up Clash of Clans. Fortunately, Honor’s chosen a chipset that passes Stuff’s austere standards. Whew.
With a measly R500 separating the two, it’ll come as no surprise that both share plenty of similarities – most of which are on the outside. Both share the same 5.56in LCD display (capable of hitting 90hz), 50MP rear camera arrays and 5MP front sensors inside the phone’s teardrop notch. That’s all powered by a 5,200mAh battery and 22.5W fast charging that Honor reckons can net 31% in 20 minutes.

Peek at both device’s innards, and you’ll see where that extra R500 went. Each is rocking the same MediaTek Helio G36 – an entry-level gaming chipset, with the differences arriving with the RAM and onboard storage. Both the X6a and X5 Plus have 4GB of RAM, though the X6a will go up to 6GB if you ask it nicely (and pay extra). The X6a also arrives with double the storage of its counterpart, coming in at 128GB.
You’ll only have two colour options for either device. Silver Sky and Cyan Lake make up the X6a’s palette and Midnight Black or Cyan Lake for the X5 Plus. Both devices are already on shelves in South Africa, though you’ll probably struggle to find them for the prices Honor reckons they should be.
