You’d think, after MTN’s SuperFlex launched last week that the company’s largest rival, Vodacom, would respond in kind, right? Well, it hasn’t. Instead, it’s launched a new service going by the name Enhance, “giving [customers] the choice and control to build their world of connectivity, entertainment, and gaming, all in one.”
Vodacom wants to Enhance your lifestyle
Sure, it’s not a month-to-month product that offers unlimited SMSes and minutes, but that’s not what Vodacom is going for. We’re pretty confident that Vodacom will catch up to MTN on that front eventually, but for now, Enhance is all you’re getting.
It’s a service that lets customers “personalise their package to reflect their lifestyle,” by adding several products and services onto one “unified bill” and eliminating the need for multiple accounts and contracts. It’s designed to be as simple as possible and allows for “choice, flexibility and value from one bill.”
It’s got some other features too, that Vodacom hopes will increase interest. Enhance allows customers to trade in their old devices, and use the credit on a brand-new smartphone, or to upgrade their contracts. If brand-new doesn’t fit your style (or budget), Enhance also has a pool of second-hand Apple iPhones that Vodacom describe as “good as new.”
It’s also offering a “financial and digital lifestyle service” through the VodaPay app, giving them access to the same discounts and rewards you’d usually find on Vodacom’s flagship app. “By bundling services together, Vodacom passes the benefits of economies of scale directly to the customer.”
Gimme gimme gimme
Vodacom’s Rishaad Tayob, director of consumer business at Vodacom South Africa, says the company is transitioning from being a “telco” to a “technology player,” which will see the mobile network operator offer more services and products within the space, such as consoles, fitness trackers, and smartphones under one umbrella.
“This dynamic contract enables everyone to also add different devices such as the latest Sony PlayStation or Microsoft Xbox to enhance their entertainment. Fitness enthusiasts can add the latest smart wearables to track and monitor their sports performance and health,” it said.

Lastly, Enhance is exploring load-shedding accessory territory, though Vodacom’s press release only mentions “Plug and Play Wi-Fi” and “UPS back-up” and doesn’t confirm or deny whether it’ll soon expand that to its line-up of promo-only power stations at a later stage or not.
