200MP Honor 90 smartphone due to land in South Africa this September

Stuff has been making a habit of being in Dubai for tech launches of late. This time around it’s the African launch of the Honor 90 5G smartphone, which is due to launch in South Africa on 1 September this year. Exact pricing details are a mystery for now but the device will be bundled with an Honor GS Watch 4 at launch. We’re told that exact pricing should turn up very soon.

The main reason to be impressed by this one? 2023’s camera pinnacle, a main 200MP sensor, seems to be the star of the show. Elsewhere, there’s a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor to look forward to, suggesting that the high-end camera phone’s price won’t blow your wallet out of the water.

Honor 90 to meet you

There’s the usual range of stuff to look forward to too. The Honor 90 5G, as the name states, will support 5G internet, there’s a 6.7in AMOLED display (120Hz, HDR10+ support, and 1,600 nits of peak brightness) to marvel over, and there should be loads of RAM and storage to fiddle with too. Honor’s really emphasising the camera this time around, for video performance as well as stills.

The rear three-camera arrangement is dominated by that 200MP sensor, with smaller backups rounding out the features there. Videos will benefit from Honor’s AI system, which suggests specific shooting modes based on what you’re pointing at. And if you’re crap at social media, well, there’s a simpleAI function for that too. Called AI Instant Movie, this feature generates a fifteen-second clip, with backing music, for you to post on your socials. That might also be why the Honor 90 is packing a 50MP ultrawide selfie camera. The upper-midrange device hopes to capture the terminally online market, it seems.

Honor made several other announcements at its Dubai event, including its sponsorship of the Gamers 8 esports festival, a smartphone partnership with PUBG Mobile (the Honor Magic 5 has that er… honour), and took a shot at a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest photo album.
