Less than 24 hours after its release, Twitter’s ‘Official’ label is gone. The platform has reverted to its old (but also new) form of verification: one tick that appears on all verified accounts. This goes for actual, notable accounts and those that felt spending $8/m (R145/m) on a social media app was worth it.
Spoiler: it wasn’t
As with every change made to Twitter recently, we have Elon Musk to thank (or blame) for it. The eccentric billionaire tweeted out a reply saying: “I just killed it,” referring to the then-new ‘official’ label. He then cited the addition and subsequent subtraction as one of Twitter’s many “dumb things” it will try to implement over the coming months.
Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months.

The grey ‘official’ checkmarks were designed to help people distinguish between an ‘actual’ verified account and an account that bought it. Now, the only way to tell the difference is to click on an account’s verified tick. A banner will appear, letting you know whether the account is the real deal or not. That won’t get annoying, will it?
Don’t take any of the changes coming to Twitter too seriously. As we’ve already seen, anything new could be scrapped in 24 hours.
