August brought us news that Meta was working on adding three new privacy changes. Well, two months later, WhatsApp is finally ready to release ‘view once’ screenshot blocking into the world. Why this wasn’t added at the time of view once’s inception, we couldn’t tell you. Better late than never, right?
For your eyes (once) only
Some users have already received the update (v2.22.22.3 or later). The rest of us will need to wait a few more days for the rollout to finish entirely. Despite not having the feature ourselves, we do know a little more about how it will eventually work.
Any user attempting to screenshot or screen-record a view once message will be greeted with the response: “Can’t take screenshot due to security policy.” The attempt won’t notify the sender, which is something we could see WhatsApp changing in the future. If you knew someone was trying to save your private images, you’d probably want to stop sending them, right?

Some users may try and use third-party software to attempt to bypass this screenshot blocker. If the recipient does try to screenshot or screen-record with this software, the saved image will automatically block out the image, leaving it black. You can see this in action in the image above.
Of course, there’s still a worry that the recipient could use a secondary device to keep some record of the image around. There isn’t really any way to stop this – so be extra careful about what you send over the messenger.
