Rain hits customers with price hikes but increases speeds, removes streaming caps

Rain

Several of Rain’s 4G and 5G products have received (fairly minor) price hikes, with the added benefit of faster speeds and fewer streaming caps. The updated prices appeared on the provider’s website on Saturday, 1 October, citing inflation as the catalyst for the hikes.

Speaking to MyBroadband, Rain explained that the increased prices would affect customers’ December invoices for services provided in November. The largest increase here is only R40, while the lowest is R15. Overall, Rain hasn’t been as greedy as it could have been. The only product that remains unchanged is Rain’s R1,000 5G for home service. Everyone else… not so lucky.

Bless the Rains

Starting off with the 4G changes, the most popular package – 24/7 uncapped 4G on any device — now costs R500 rather than R480. Though Rain has removed the 360p streaming cap, no speeds were increased.

Rain’s off-peak 4G services now cost R265, up from R250. 4G for phones has seen a R20 increase, costing customers R320 per month. As with the other services, the 360p streaming cap is no more.

Onto 5G, the provider’s basic 5G services, which previously cost R500, have increased to R530. This package was limited to 720p streaming, which has now been removed from the product’s page on Rain’s website. It’s also seen a speed increase, up to 30Mbps from the 25Mbps it was before.

The final increase concerns Rain’s 5G ‘standard’ plan, which has gone from R700 up to R740. Where there was a 1080p cap previously, Rain has mentioned “upgraded streaming” in its marketing material. Previously, the product’s speed was maxed at 50Mbps, the new limit is 60Mbps.

As we mentioned, the provider’s best package, which offers “ultra-fast” speeds and no stream caps will remain unchanged. Looks like a more-than-subtle nudge for users to upgrade.
