One of the biggest problems with any modern games console is just how reliant they are on the internet. The Xbox lineup does it. Sony’s… historically been a little better, but it’s also prone to a few issues. Well, Microsoft’s made one little change that should have a large difference.
If you’re used to running into issues with sketchy internet and Xbox One discs, they will now largely be a thing of the past. The September 2022 software for Microsoft’s consoles now largely disregards the online compatibility check when users stick a disc in.

Yes, this is true since the 2206 update. We examined data since Series X|S launch & determined the online compatibility check isn’t needed in the vast majority of cases for Xbox One discs. Some games may still need to be updated online after install to ensure the best experience.

This form of DRM (digital rights management) checks to see if you’ve got the rights to play the game. It makes sense when a digital game is launched since it’s easy enough to copy a set of files. But for a disc… turns out performing a DRM check just wastes time.
The Xbox update should already be installed on your console since it was issued earlier this month. You don’t need to do anything, it’s all working in the background. But it doesn’t mean you can abandon your internet connection altogether.
Yes, for some Xbox games you can stick a disc in, install, and start playing. But it’s an unfortunate fact that some physical discs don’t ship with the whole game on. Those will still need to complete updating before you can use them. If there’s an incomplete update already downloading, you’ll probably have to finish that too. Still, there’s less DRM in the world.
