The whole iPhone 15 lineup will include Apple’s Digital Island – report

Dynamic Island Apple

It must be really fun working in Apple’s marketing department. Take an inconvenience like, say, a hole in the display, call it something like a Digital Island, and people will love you for it. Or, at the very least, start using your terminology instead of calling it a ‘bloody big hole in the screen’.

The totally-intentional ‘feature’ seen in Apple’s newly announced iPhone 14 Pro lineup might have proved more popular than anyone expected. It’ll reportedly show up in every one of Apple’s iPhone 15 handset in 2023. This also means that yes, iPhone 15 rumours have started.

Digital Island holiday

The feature isn’t official until Apple says it is, but analyst Ross Young, who has a decent track record with Apple kit, reckons it’ll happen. Digital Island will come to the iPhone 15 range across the board, but Apple’s not expected to make its very best screen tech available to everyone. If you want a 120Hz refresh rate or a low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide panel, you’ll have to shell out for the iPhone 15 Pro.

Digital Island might not be official but the move would make sense. Despite our earlier snark, repurposing a gap in the display to show notifications is one way to turn a negative into a positive. It would probably be more versatile on an Android smartphone — the more customisable OS lends itself to creativity. But Apple’s developers are plenty creative on their own and the early look at Digital Island is intriguing.

It would be like Apple to give its less expensive devices some new features. Particularly since it seems to have taken away standard processors across the lineup. So, to recap, 2023’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus should feature Digital Island and the A16 Bionic processor — both of which were announced this year.
