Solar solution rentals are the way forward thanks to a partnership between Huawei and MetroWatt

Solar panels are expensive. Very expensive. Huawei and MetroWatt have spotted a gap within the market, forming a partnership to offer solar installations for a rental fee rather than a once-off purchase. Take that, Eskom.

Pricing starts at R2,800/m, with the more extensive system costing R3,800p/m. It’s certainly not “cheap”, though it’s a big offset to the pricing of outright buying a solar system. The savings alone in electricity would help pay for the rental fees, anyway.

Solar Solutions for all

“Our hybrid solar and battery backup solution comprises both state-of-the-art technology owing to our 22 years’ experience within the IT sector,” MetroWatt CEO Laurent Pieton said. “This is combined with the most advanced equipment because of our strong partnership with technology partner Huawei FusionSolar.”

MetroWatt and Huawei offer two different solar solutions. The cheaper of the two costs R2,800 and hooks your house up with: a 5kW smart inverter, 11 panels with optimisers, and 5kWh battery storage. If you have a bigger house or a larger disposable income there’s a R3,800 option which gets you: a 5kW smart inverter, 16 panels with optimisers, and 10kWh battery storage.

Once you’ve placed an order, someone is sent out to perform a site check as soon as possible. Installation happens pretty quickly – according to MetroWatt – and is activated soon after the order has been placed.

There’s also a MetroWatt app that allows users to keep track of the status and usage of their solar system. Overall, it seems like a good deal. You can make your purchase or find out more on MetroWatt’s site.
