Amazon has been on a buying spree of late. It’s not certain whether the company is looking to become the first truly dystopian megacorp. Some might argue that has already taken place. But acquiring iRobot, the company that makes the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner, has to push it a rung or two further up that ladder.
What Amazon plans to do with its new bauble is also doubtful. It’ll definitely fold iRobot’s tech into its range of smart products, possibly giving the world a Ring Roomba. We’re picturing an automatic vacuum cleaner that can also go and see who’s at the door.

Amazon Devices’ Dave Limp said, “We know that saving time matters, and chores take precious time that can be better spent doing something that customers love… Customers love iRobot products—and I’m excited to work with the iRobot team to invent in ways that make customers’ lives easier and more enjoyable.”

iRobot CEO Colin Angle added, “Amazon shares our passion for building thoughtful innovations that empower people to do more at home, and I cannot think of a better place for our team to continue our mission.”
The deal is worth R28.6 billion ($1.7 billion) but it hasn’t closed yet. There’s still shareholder approval to clear, and regulators to placate. If the deal does complete, Angle will remain in charge of operations at iRobot.
