WhatsApp to launch the ability to silently slip away from groups you don’t want to be in

It’s always easier to slip away from a large party than a tiny party, isn’t it? Well, with WhatsApp group sizes moving up from 256 to 512 members, ghosting the party may get a little easier thanks to a new feature WhatsApp is working on.

According to WABetaInfo “silently exit groups” is the new feature coming soon to a WhatsApp near you.

WhatsApp with that?

That’s the great thing about large parties. Usually, only the hosts know you’re on your way out. If you have any manners, anyway. This WhatsApp feature works similarly, with only admins receiving a message that you exited a group. Notifying an admin is an obvious step. As curators of that group, they have to be kept in the know about people joining a group or leaving it. You can’t totally ninja your way out, but it’s close enough.

The feature would mean that if you want to quietly leave the ol’ family group, you will probably get away with it.  Without getting flack from your parents. Or you can leave all those groups you joined in university. Or… Nobody will ever know you’ve gone on a WhatsApp group ghosting spree. Except the admins, but they don’t count.

Currently, when users exit a group, WhatsApp adds a system message in the chat to inform all groupies that they have exited the group.

With the silent exit feature, WhatsApp is also clearly making way for you to leave one or more non-used groups, without making a public party out of it.

WABetaInfo says the screenshot above is from the WhatsApp desktop beta. It added that the beta versions of the feature for Apple and Android will also be available in the future. It’s still under development, so there’s no clear timeline for when you can ghost that one group. But rest easy. It’s coming.
