Grocery delivery service app Checkers Sixty60 is adding 80 more stores to the service in the next six months. This brings the total number of supported stores to 346. If you haven’t had a chance to experience the gloriousness that is Sixty60, your time might be nigh.
The Shoprite Group reported how well the app is doing since its launch. Since its November 2019 launch, growth has been exponential. Over the last reported period, which covers the last six months of 2021, online orders increased by 250%.
It also said that one in three users are new. It’s possible that the recent launch of LiquorShop Online is a serious contributor to this fresh update.
Great marketing ideas
The app is famous for exploiting overly-discussed trends, like The Tinder Swindler or Eskom. When Simon Leviev was a major topic of discussion, the app’s layout was all about the Netflix hit. Groceries were thrown into categories such as ‘My Enemies Are After Me’, which featured energy drinks. Another was ‘Peter Hurt?’ which showcased bandages and painkillers, while ‘Billionaires’ Club’ showed off fancy wine and champagne. There were plenty more, of course, plus a hilarious video parody.
At the moment, the Sixty60 app features a strong focus on our Eskom-plicated lives, and how to deal with the state power utility’s inability to keep the lights on.
Too slow
Sixty60 is the dominant delivery app in SA at present. Latecomer Spar only hopped onto the grocery-delivery-via-app bandwagon this month. Pick’n’Pay acquired online delivery app Bottles in October 2020, rebranding it to asap! in 2021. Woolworths launched its same-day delivery service Woolies Dash in December 2020.
But they still can’t hold a candle to Shoprite’s service. Checkers Sixty60, since launch, has racked up over 2 million downloads and has helped provide 4,000 jobs, according to Shoprite.
