The latest iPhone 14 Pro rumour says next device will offer most RAM of any iPhone

Apple

The iPhone 13 isn’t even six months old yet and we’re already hearing whispers about the next device. Those whispers are saying the iPhone 14 Pro will feature up to 8GB of RAM, the most memory yet in an iPhone. That’s assuming Apple sticks to its current naming scheme and we haven’t completely run out of semiconductors by then.

According to DigitalTrends, this rumour comes from a Korean blogger that goes by the handle yeux1122 on Korean blogging site Naver. This one’s unverified but the blogger previously correctly predicted the release of the iPad Mini last year so they might be on to something. They didn’t get every iPad detail right, so a measure of salt should be taken here. That said, this isn’t the first rumour to this effect, which gives it slightly more credence.

If the rumours are true then the supposed 8GB of RAM the iPhone 14 Pro will bring it up to par with flagships from most other brands. iPhones have always been a little light in the RAM department when compared to Android devices.

Why the extra RAM, Apple?

That’s because iOS is a native platform that only Apple works on. Everything about these devices is highly optimised and designed to work well with everything else. That essentially means, iPhones don’t need as much RAM because the SoCs are generally faster and more efficient than their Android counterparts. But then we need to ask why Apple’s going bigger this year.

Samsung just launched its new Galaxy S range and opted to offer less RAM in its top-end device. The Galaxy S21 Ultra came with 12GB or 16GB of RAM whereas the Galaxy S22 Ultra ships with 8GB or 12GB. We suspect this might be one of the reasons Samsung managed to keep its prices more or less the same as the Galaxy S21 lineup.

Could this RAM upgrade mean the iPhone 14 Pro is packing a new chip that can leverage the extra memory? Why the upgrade now? Well, the company has long been rumoured to be releasing AR and VR hardware. Some extra RAM might help there. But it’s not official by any means. These questions will probably only be officially answered when/if the new devices are released. We’re sure to hear many more rumours before then, though.
