There’s widespread debate about the term ‘vintage’ and how things of value make it into that category. For cars, it’s being built somewhere between 1919 and 1930. For furniture, it needs at least 20 years on the clock. iPhones, however, can be vintage at the tender young age of 8 years old, according to Apple.
iPhone 6 Plus showing its age?
Apple has now added the iPhone 6 Plus device to the list of its vintage devices. Interestingly, the iPhone 6 that launched alongside the 6 Plus hasn’t been added to the list yet. That’s simply because the production of the 6 continued until 2018 following a relaunch in 2017.
The iPhone 6 Plus launched in September 2014, and was discontinued in 2016 following the 7 and 7 Plus launch. It was part of the first iPhone range featuring multiple sizes, which became common in subsequent flagship announcements. But being a trendsetter wasn’t enough to keep the iPhone 6 Plus on Apple’s shelves for too long.
Apple continued to offer software support for the device until 2019 when it introduced iOS 13. Of course, users should still be able to access all their favourite features and apps if they own a 6-labelled device. Probably for a good few years more.
According to MacRumors, the list of vintage devices includes any product that the company “…stopped distributing for sale more than five years ago and less than seven years ago.”
