We can add Panasonic to the list of companies that faced hacker attacks this year. The Japanese tech conglomerate has sent out a press release announcing that it experienced a data breach earlier this month.
According to the release, Panasonic discovered that its internal network had been accessed by an unauthorised party on the 11th of November. A subsequent investigation found that the intruder had managed to access private data stored on one of the company’s servers.

“After detecting the unauthorized access, the company immediately reported the incident
to the relevant authorities and implemented security countermeasures, including steps
to prevent external access to the network” reads the press release.
Panasonic is currently investigating the breach, internally and in collaboration with an unnamed specialist third-party to ” determine if the breach involved customers’ personal information and/or sensitive information related to social infrastructure.”
While this implies that Panasonic currently doesn’t know whether sensitive information, belonging to company or customer, was exposed, The Record reports otherwise, citing Japanese news outlets Mainichi and NHK. According to both publications, the data breach occurred sometime between June and November (a particularly bumper few months for cyber-attacks it seems), and that the actor had access to: “sensitive information such as customer details, employee personal information, Panasonic technical files from the company’s domestic operations.”
As mentioned, Panasonic has yet to confirm or deny whether any sensitive information was leaked. No doubt we’ll see an official update from the company in the coming days once it and its third-party specialist have concluded their investigations into the matter.
