Razer’s Zephyr N95 mask launches, completely sells out an hour later

We might be heading towards the tail end of COVID but that wasn’t about to stop Razer from releasing its Zephyr N95 mask. Originally shown off at this year’s CES, the company said that it would bring Project Hazel, as it was then known, to market sometime this year.

That’s now happened. The Zephyr N95 mask went on sale last night, because on-sale times only matter if you’re an American, and then… all available stock immediately sold out.

The Zephyr N95: COVID’s Bane

Razer went all-out on its design, making it look like something the well-dressed class of cyber-goth might be rocking this season. You know, it’s stylish apocalypse-wear. Because it’s made by Razer, it’s got the company’s trademark Chroma RGB lighting, so everyone’s going to know you’re sitting in that darkened movie theatre.

The mask, as the name suggests, uses N95 filters capable of filtering out 99% of bacteria (BFE). There are dual fans in there to facilitate facial cooling and better filtration, as well as a clear design with an anti-fog coating so people can actually see what your face looks like when the RGB gives it a rest for a second.

What’s missing is the voice modulation that was promised, which is a pity. The ability to actually sound like Bane from The Dark Knight Rises would have just made this particular mask. It probably wouldn’t have helped the price at all, though. Part of the reason for its rapid disappearance was the cost — it launched at just $99 (about R1,500). At that price, you might as well have been born to it. Moulded by it, even.
