EA will decide Anthem’s fate this week

Remember Anthem? EA’s multiplayer looter-shooter that released way back in February 2019, packed with gear to grind for, cosmetics to customise with, and a slew of (potentially game-breaking) bugs? Well, according to Bloomberg, Electronic Arts Inc. will hold a meeting to decide what happens to the title next this week

In case you don’t know, Anthem had a rough release and ultimately… kind of bombed. It was set to be like Destiny, a multiplayer online shooter where the core gameplay loop was to finish quests, acquire upgrades and new weapons to make yourself more powerful and ultimately do harder quests. Unfortunately, players found the grind tedious, and the release was plagued with bugs.

The game also felt incomplete. Not ready. So EA set up a small team to revamp it. Some have referred to this revamped version as “Anthem Next” or “Anthem 2.0”. Poorly received video games have achieved redemption before, with Final Fantasy 14 and No Man’s Sky being the best examples of this. Even Cyberpunk 2077, which came out at the end of last year, is looking to make a comeback from a shaky start.

This week EA will look at Anthem now that it’s been reworked, and determine whether it will be reborn and revamped, or buried. Gone forever, remembered in infamy as just… a disappointment.
