Three 5G towers have been destroyed in KZN due to conspiracy theory

No matter how many scientific articles are shared and conspiracy theories are disproved, there’ll always be that one guy who doesn’t shut up and learn. Such is the case in KZN where three 5G cellphone towers have been burnt and destroyed following remarks made by KZN district councillor Sifiso Mngadi insisting that COVID-19 is a hoax and that 5G is making people sick.

Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams spoke of the destruction of the towers in a statement released earlier today. “The country currently needs resilient and high-speed connectivity for every citizen to enable them to participate meaningfully in the digital economy,” said Ndabeni-Abrahams. “It is regrettable that the much-needed network infrastructure is being destroyed.”

As reported by MyBroadband, over the course of the week three cellphone towers, owned by both Vodacom and MTN, were destroyed. Sticking it to some theory that’s complete nonsense. At least it wasn’t the 80 towers that were burned down in the UK last year. Little miracles, you know?

5G whizz, how dumb can we get?

While concerns about the non-existent link between 5G connections and COVID-19 became prominent during the initial stages of the pandemic in 2020, most people seemingly gave up on the idea when they realised it was nonsense. Of course, we couldn’t have kept that way as KZN district councillor Sifiso Mngadi started spreading lies through a voice note that circulated around social media this week.

“This thing of watching [Health Minister] Zweli Mkhize and Ramaphosa… We need to disconnect the 5G. They have disconnected them in other countries, they destroyed them. We need to send a team from disaster management, electricity and IT. They know them. We can give them 24 hours to disconnect and leave behind the 4G and 3G. Otherwise, we will die,” said Mngadi.

The ANC has condemned the statement by Mngadi as party spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela said, “It’s lunacy of the highest order, and you can quote me on that”.

At this point, it shouldn’t need to be repeated but just in case you missed out: 5G doesn’t cause COVID-19. The pandemic is real. Don’t burn down cellphone towers. Wear a mask.
