What was meant to be the biggest game of the year has turned into one of its most disappointing debacles. It’s become so bad that Sony has officially pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store as it attempts to address all the folks looking for a refund for the game. The game’s developer, CD Projekt Red, issued a statement on the matter encouraging folks to wait for more updates to the game before refunding but if someone is willing to go to the effort of deal with PlayStation’s refund system, it’s too late for them.
In case you haven’t been following the whole situation, here’s the brief summary. Cyberpunk 2077 was the most anticipated game of the year and it launched as a broken, unfinished mess, CDPR hid the state of the game from consumers by only handing out PC codes for review. The company apologised and said that consumers could get a refund but didn’t actually set up a process with Sony and Microsoft so most refunds were rejected. Now, Sony is doing CDPR’s dirty work for them by actually handling refunds but has also pulled the game from the PlayStation Store to prevent anyone else from buying it. And all of this after delaying the game at least three times.

Sony issued a statement on the process this morning: “SIE strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, therefore we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store. SIE will also be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store until further notice. Once we have confirmed that you purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store, we will begin processing your refund. Please note that completion of the refund may vary based on your payment method and financial institution.”
CD PR also issued a brief statement on the matter with the sentence, “According to our knowledge, starting today, everyone who is not willing to wait for updates and wants to refund their digital copy of the game, can do so by submitting a request at https://www.playstation.com/cyberpunk-2077-refunds/,” perfectly summing up its response.
It makes sense why players would want a refund. Just a cursory glance at Google will reveal how badly the game plays on PS4, with slightly better performance on PS5 via backward compatibility. This is a huge move by Sony to clean up CDPR’s mess. One has to imagine that they’re more than a little upset at initially being thrown under the refund bus.
