An 80W wireless charger is being developed by Xiaomi

Wireless chargers are just cool. There’s not much more to it than that, honestly. Sure, they remove the hassle of fishing for your cable after it’s slipped beneath the bed because who needs the terror of fighting off a potential monster that’s luring you into the shadows where no-one dares to tread?

So I suppose not dying by the hands of a monster, real or imagined, is the biggest positive to wireless chargers but they have been known to be a touch inefficient. There can be issues with connection and the charging speed may not be all that fast at times but overall, it’s just really cool that you can charge devices without plugging them in!

Of course, Xiaomi isn’t one to just let an invention stagnate as it aims to take wireless charging into the future. The Chinese technology company has announced that it’s working on an 80W wireless charger that’s capable of charging a phone in under 30 minutes. Of course, that depends entirely on your battery but it’s also wild that we’re now seeing 80W wireless chargers at all.

Around the world in 80W

Xiaomi released a short video over the weekend to prove the speeds the 80W wireless charger was capable of and made the bold claim that it was the faster than any competitor out there. The demonstration showed the charger itself taking a 4,000mAh battery, which is huge, and getting it to 50% capacity in only eight minutes is no small feat. Moreover, the battery was fully charged in 19 minutes. That’s… unreal. Like, can you imagine how much more efficient that would make the life of everyone with a smartphone? Granted, I could just bail out of a party early by using the excuse, “Sorry, I have to charge my phone” but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

Xiaomi currently dominates the business of wireless charging as the Mi 10 Ultra supports 50W wireless charging that can charge the device’s 4,500 mAh battery to full in 40 minutes. The only company to come close to actually competing with Xiaomi is Oppo, another Chinese company that recently launched into South Africa, which has developed a 65W wireless charger capable of charging a 4,000 mAh in 30 minutes.

To put this all into context, that MagSafe thing Apple announced last week? Yeah, that supports wireless charging but it’s only 15W. Which is, I’m sure it’s fair to say, leaving much to be desired.

We have no idea when to expect a Xiaomi device that supports 80W charging but one has to hope that it’s in the near future because technology like that is… well, as I’ve said before, it’s just really cool.
