Another Xperia you’ll never own: Sony’s Xperia 5 II sports a 120Hz display, Sony’s camera smarts

Sony’s Xperia phones have definitely got South African fans. Fans that, sadly, can no longer officially get their hands on the handsets thanks to the company largely pulling its phone lineup out of the country. So every time Sony announces a new handset in the range, it’s a little bittersweet. That’s the case here as well, with the new Sony Xperia 5 II.

And that’s because the 6.1in smartphone is one of Sony’s most powerful and feature-packed devices yet. That OLED screen runs at 120Hz, giving Samsung’s biggest phones a run for their money, and there’s a Snapdragon 865 inside along with 8GB of RAM. Shouldn’t experience much slowdown with that one and Sony says that you won’t have battery issues either. The included 4,000mAh battery should last a full two years — or, at least, that’s the claim. Only one way to find out if Sony’s telling the truth.

Most of the camera tech inside the Xperia 5 II matches up with what the equally-elusive Xperia 1 II is carting around. The same triple-camera arrangement is there, with optics by Zeiss, giving users 120fps slow-mo as well as real-time eye-autofocus (which is a feature of Sony’s newest cameras).

They’re due out (internationally) before the end of the year and you expect them to cost around R15,500, before you start adding tax, shipping and customs expenses to the bottom line. But if you love your Sony Xperia handsets, you’ll want to give this a look.
