No-one was quite ready for the exemplary lineup of games Sony hit us with late last night. The highly anticipated PlayStation 5 reveal keynote had our curiosity, but after the very first PS5 reveal title, it had our undivided attention.
What was most striking about the PS5 reveal lineup, was that Sony had gone out of its way to present us with remasters, remakes and sequel to some of the world’s favourite original PlayStation games. Our favourite of which is definitely Oddworld: Soulstorm based on Abe’s Odyssey and the long-running Oddworld series, as well as a brilliant new Ratched and Clank game. The latter of which showcased some of the PS5’s insane load times.
Of course, what stole the show was the official reveal of the actual hardware of the PlayStation 5 and all of the accessories that’ll come with it. If you’re keen on finding out more about the console itself, we covered it here. But for now — we’re diving into our favourite game announcements from the keynote.
First, the games we cannot wait to play
Horizon Forbidden West
We absolutely knew that Sony was going to wow us near the end of the keynote. We just didn’t know what to expect. And it’s safe to say that Sony left the best for last, because Horizon Forbidden West looks like a beautiful game that continues a brilliant storyline from the first Horizon Zero Dawn title. This feature trailer was where the ray-tracing graphics of the PS5 really shone, and with those dynamic landscapes, we cannot wait to get our hands on this title.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
Any Ratched and Clank fan probably almost fell off their seats during the new feature last night. Developers Insomniac Games will bring the new title to the PS5, featuring some of the most impressive load times we’ve seen in a next-gen console game feature yet. There is no set release date yet, but this one will definitely help Sony sell more PS5’s. The main mechanic is travelling through inter-dimensional rifts, which is made possible by next-level loading speeds using PS5’s hardware. Yup, no loading screens.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
The game that we least expected to be revealed last night turned out to be the show opener, and safe to say our jaws were open too… Spider-Man: Miles Morales will launch on the PS5 late this year. You heard it folks, we’re getting a new Spidey game in 2020. The previous title, Marvel’s Spider-Man was used as a tech demo for showing off how quickly the PS5’s hardware could render and load between fast-travel points. It turns out this is less a sequel and more an expansion on the current game. We’re not sure if Marvel’s Spider-Man will be remastered as part of the launch, but we’ll wait and see.
Stray
Among all the indie titles that showed off its games last night, the one that stood out most is definitely Stray — a game about a cat that cannot meow, set in a robot-clad dystopian cyberpunk setting. The graphics are truly beautiful, and it looks like players will actually play as the adorable creature. We cannot wait to see this world unfold.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Another unexpected favourite from the keynote is Kena: Bridge of Spirits, made by an animation house called Ember Labs. Kena is a story-driven action-adventure game where the player collects tiny spirit companions and manipulate the environment around them. The graphics showcase a beautifully animated world with cute creatures and vibrant gra[hics. This one’s definitely on our must-play list for the next-gen console.
Demon’s Souls
You heard it, friends. There is a new Souls game coming to the next generation PS5 console in the form of Demon’s Souls. Developed by FromSoftware, the remaster of the first game in the Souls series, seams to sport some intriguing gameplay and a creature-dense world. All Souls fans will no doubt be lining up to get this title loaded on their consoles. Just don’t throw that pretty PS5 haptic-feedback-enabled controller, now.
Resident Evil: The Village
In another completely unexpected move, Capcom revealed (a very Silent Hill-ly) next entry in the popular Resident Evil franchise. This one will be played in the first-person perspective, have mighty creepy storylines and graphics, while bringing the best of the series into a new world. The trailer didn’t show much more than that, but you’re betting we’re keen on this bad boy — coming in 2021.
