It’s a good time to be a free-to-play game developer as Call of Duty: Warzone hits 30 million players

The battle royale mode attached to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been raking in the player numbers, which makes a lot of sense considering that people love Call of Duty, love being the last person standing in a vicious fight to the death and love being unable to leave their houses due to the spread of a virus!

Call of Duty: Warzone is huge. Wild, right? Who would have thought that a free battle royale mode for one of the most popular video game franchises ever would receive so much love and attention from gamers? Certainly not us! While it’s easy to be sarcastic at the popularity of Warzone, it’s genuinely impressive how well the mode has done for Activision and Infinity Ward. In just a week the mode has roped in more players than most multiplayer games do in their entire lifetimes.

Specifically, Warzone has pulled in 30 million players only ten days after launch. That’s…monumental. It’s easy to see why though: Beyond the Call of Duty brand, Warzone is actually a lot of fun to play. We were able to squeeze in a few rounds over the weekend and had a blast. It’s that same COD formula but ramped up to a scale bigger than Blackout, the battle royale mode included in 2018’s Black Ops IV.

Of course, the fact that millions of people are under some form of quarantine, self-isolation or practicing social distancing certainly helped pump those numbers up. While the rest of the world is stressing over the collapse of civilised society due to COVID-19, one can only imagine Activision laughing gleefully to the bank.
